Honey thief gets medical attention before sentencing
A 69 year old man who stole 17 bottles of honey and claimed he used it to help with his asthma, was taken to obtain medical attention after complaining to the police that he was not feeling well.
Brian Cuffy of Calliaqua appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on December 11, 2024, before Senior Magistrate ,Tammika Mckenzie, where he was ordered to pay compensation, and was given a suspended sentence for stealing 10 IGA containers of honey, and seven Essential Everyday honey brands, totalling EC$578.25, the property of Massy Stores, Kingstown between November 19, 2024 and December 2, 2024, at Kingstown.
Prior to his sentencing, Cuffy, who pleaded guilty to the offences, complained to the police that he was not feeling well, and was taken to the prison, where he was examined by medical personnel.
When he returned to the courtroom, Cuffy was ordered to compensate Massy Stores in the amount of $578.25 by January 17, 2025, or serve three months in prison. He also was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for six months.
Cuffy, who walked in a halting manner, was assisted by police officers as they escorted him out of the courtroom.
The facts are that on December 2, 2024 at about 9:25 a.m, Cuffy left the store after placing two bottles of honey in a sand bag.
He was stopped by security, and during a search, he took two bottles of honey from his bag.
A further search was done on his person and two more bottles of honey were found. Security footage revealed that Cuffy stole multiple bottles of honey from the store, between November 19 and 28, 2024. The Calliaqua resident has previous convictions for offences of a similar nature.
During Cuffy’s arraignment on December 3, 2024, lawyer, Grant Connell, told the court that Cuffy uses honey to help with his asthma.
