Show more dignity for income support recipients says Opposition Leader

Leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), Dr Godwin Friday, has made a call for the government to treat Vincentians with dignity.

“We have to be able to treat people with dignity when we are actually providing that assistance that they need,” the Opposition Leader said on the New Democratic Party’s New Times programme on Monday, December, 9, 2024..

He was referring to a situation that took place in Kingstown last Friday, December 6, 2024, where the Ministry of National Mobilization was distributing bank cards to persons adversely affected during the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024. on the mainland.

This distribution took place at the Victoria Park in Kingstown, where there were long lines of people waiting to get their cards. The government is providing income support of $600 monthly to these affected Vincentians for the period, October to December, 2024.

Friday argued that his party supports the income support, but suggested that the distribution of the cards could have been done in the communities, to avoid the long lines that were at the Victoria Park on Friday.
