Honey producers getting financial support

Things are getting sweeter for honey producers in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) as the government moves in with financial assistance for persons involved in this industry.

Speaking on NBC radio on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, Minister of Agriculture, Saboto Caesar said the government is now working with the Bee Keepers Association.

He said the sum of $150,000 has already been allocated to assist local honey producers. Outlining the reason for the assistance, Caesar said “ there are many producers who were impacted by the volcanic eruptions.”

In these cases, the volcanic ash from the explosions, destroyed their production areas. Honey producers also suffered loss as a result of the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024.

Caesar asked honey producers to contact their Agricultural Extension Officers and provide the requisite details. While bee keepers are spread throughout SVG, the minister said the major production hub for honey is Union Island and Bequia.

The money will be paid directly into the bank accounts of recipients.
