Young men urged to gain a skill and be productive

Minister with responsibility for youth, Orando Brewster has challenged young men across the state to become motivated and acquire a skill.

The minister, who has responsibility for Youth, sent out this challenge as he gave brief remarks at the

Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) National Youth Symposium, last Thursday, November 21, 2024.

The symposium gave TVET students the opportunity to glean information from stakeholders in the tourism and business sectors.

Highlighting the revamped Youth In Service (YES) programme which allows participants to gain on the job training and a Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) certificate, Brewster expressed his disappointment in the lack of participation of young men in these programmes. He said there are many technical institutes which provide training in such skills as plumbing, carpentry and electrical installation, that increases potential for employability.

Brewster, who is also the Minister of Housing minister, said there is a growing demand for people who possess those particular skills, especially in the rebuilding process post Hurricane Beryl, and he used the opportunity to encourage young men to join in rebuilding the nation. (API)
