Book by prison inmates soon to be published
At a date not yet set in December 2024, a book of literary work and illustrations done by people incarcerated at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) is expected to be released.
The book is being published by Mark and Ruth Boerger of Hobo Jungle Press and comes out of a 13-week workshop held at HMP and spearheaded by cultural icon, David “Darkie” Williams, with assistance from incarcerated journalist Junior Jarvis.
Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT last week Thursday, November 7, 2024, at the Curator’s House in Botanic Gardens, Mark said the initiative was well received by Jarvis.
“It is all ready to go…we are really excited about the writings,” Mark commented, while adding that the publication is made up of short stories, poetry and “some illustrations”.
“There is some really good work there,” Mark said of the publication.
He also revealed that Hobo Jungle Press is the only publisher that operates in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), and they have published 70 books, mostly by Vincentians.
He said they are available to look at manuscripts, and can also assist with editing, layout, cover design, illustration and submission to publishers. The duo have been doing this for over 25 years in SVG, Mark said.
