Clare Valley School hosts well supported World Food Day activity
THE CLARE VALLEY GOVERNMENT SCHOOL on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, held its annual World Food Day activities on the small playing field next to the school. The activity was well patronised by members of the Clare Valley community, but some who went at mid-day were visibly upset when they found that there were no more eats available.
Four dishes were prepared by the events committee with assistance from some parents- Vincentian favourites of bakes with salt fish or blackfish; Jamaican jerk chicken and festival; Trinidad and Tobago’s poluri; and Guyana’s roti.
“Besides that we had some sweet treats on the side. We had fudge, tamarind balls, sugar cake, and tamarind stew that we were selling on the side, along with cinnamon roll,” Joselle Mufford-Pope, a Grade Six teacher at the school told SEARCHLIGHT, speaking on behalf of the events committee.
The teacher related that the response from the community “was very good,” with “students bringing in some contributions towards what we were doing today.”
She said planning for the annual activity started “since the beginning of the school year in September.”
Mufford-Pope who has been teaching at the Clare Valley Government School for seven years, rated last year’s activity “as a much bigger one… because we had other countries”, but this year’s community response compared to last year “is about the same”, she said of the activity which also is a fundraiser for the school.
Principal, Maxine Coombs, expressed satisfaction with the efforts of the events committee, and the response from residents of the Clare Valley community to the event.
