Child abuse charges brought against Lowmans Windward woman

Police have arrested and charged Mavis Cockburn, a 45-year-old Domestic Worker of Lowmans Windward, with two counts of assault related to the physical abuse of an 8-year-old student.

The charges were laid on September 25 in relation to an incident which came to light on social media recently.

The child’s mother, who said she currently resides overseas, posted photos of the cuts and bruises on the child’s back, legs and face.

According to the investigation, Cockburn is alleged to have assaulted the minor by “beating him with a piece of board and belt about the body,” causing Actual Bodily Harm.

In addition, it is further alleged that between May 1, 2024, and September 19, 2024, Cockburn, who had custody of the minor, willfully assaulted him in a manner causing unnecessary injury to his health. The offences were committed in Lowmans Windward.

Cockburn appeared before the Kingstown Magistrate Court on September 26, 2024 and pleaded not guilty to the charges. She was granted composite bail in the sum of $2000.00 ECC with one surety. She was also ordered not to have any contact with the complainant and to report to the Biabou Police Station every Wednesday between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 pm. The matter was adjourned and transferred to the Family Court for October 3, 2024.
