Elderly Fancy man dies in house fire

POLICE are investigating the circumstances of a house fire in Fancy on Thursday morning, September 4, 2024, which resulted in the death of an elderly man.

The deceased has been identified as Carlos Stay whose house was located in close proximity to the ‘Welcome to Fancy’ sign on the country’s north coast.

SEARCHLIGHT understands that the fire broke out in the concrete house sometime before midday on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

Stay lived in the house with his wife and extended family members, and he died at the scene of the fire.

There are no reports of anyone else being hurt in the blaze.

Residents in the area claim that the 67 year old man had made previous attempts to take his life.

On one occasion, he reportedly tried to throw himself into the sea, but was subsequently found on a rock.

In another recent suspected suicide attempt, Stay was said to have been rescued after locking himself in a room while being in possession of a sharp object.

The former construction worker was reported to be showing signs of depression. Investigations into the incident have been launched.
