The Insurance Association of SVG presents Police with traffic signs
The Insurance Association of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) Inc. has handed over nine traffic signs to the Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) Traffic Department in what the police said is “a powerful demonstration of partnership and shared responsibility”.
The ceremony, held at the Central Police Station on Wednesday, August 28, marks a significant step forward in the nation’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety, the police said in a release.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Insurance Association’s Executive, including Vice President Desra Glasgow, along with representatives from Gulf Insurance Limited, WAD Agencies, Sentry Insurance, Caribbean Alliance, and Metrocint General Insurance Company Ltd. The RSVGPF was represented by the Commissioner of Police (Ag), Enville Williams, and other high-ranking officials, including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Parnel Browne, officer in charge of the Traffic Department.
Glasgow emphasized the critical role that the Insurance Association plays not only in regulating the insurance industry but also in addressing broader societal issues, such as road safety. “Traffic signs are not merely markers; they are essential tools for ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users,” she said in opening remarks.
“ This initiative is a testament to our commitment to reducing accidents and promoting safer driving habits across St Vincent and the Grenadines.”
Glasgow expressed gratitude to all involved in the project, highlighting the collaborative efforts that made the initiative possible.
Superintendent of Police, Junior Simmons, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner, lauded the initiative, emphasizing the significance of the collaboration between the Police and the Insurance Association. He noted that the newly installed traffic signs would serve as vital reminders for motorists to exercise caution, ultimately contributing to safer roads. The Superintendent noted that, “These signs are a visual reminder of the need for vigilance and responsibility on our roads. We are grateful for this initiative and hope it is the first of many contributions to come.”
He also commended organizers of the initiative and those who facilitated the project, recognizing the critical impact of such partnerships in enhancing public safety.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sentry Insurance and co-sponsor of the signs, Fidel Taylor, underscored the insurance industry’s concern about the increasing number of motor vehicle accidents, particularly those involving inexperienced drivers. He said that Sentry Insurance, as the second-largest provider of motor vehicle insurance in SVG, has seen a significant rise in claims, which directly affects the industry’s financial stability. Taylor emphasized that these traffic signs are part of a broader strategy to mitigate risks and encourage safer driving practices among all road users.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, Browne receiving the signs from Glasgow, acknowledged the Insurance Association’s role in this initiative and the positive impact it would have on reducing road accidents in the country.
