MyApp Summer Programme turns out enthusiasts in Robotics
After three weeks of training, a number of secondary school students have successfully graduated from the MyAPP Summer Programme which was facilitated by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC). It was held at two locations this year, including at Georgetown.
A total of 26 students from various schools graduated from the programme at a ceremony held at the Georgetown Secondary School.
Speaking at the graduation at the on Friday August 23, 2024, programme instructor, Jose Mendoza said at the start, the students were filled with doubts and a bit of trepidation. However, by the end of three weeks, they had become robot enthusiasts and proudly showed off a robot which they developed during the workshop.
“We discovered the power of teamwork, the importance of collaboration, and the satisfaction of overcoming adversity,” Mendoza remarked.
He said that through the programme, the students have become programmers, engineers and innovators. The instructor added that the students have learnt to think critically, to solve problems creatively and to communicate effectively.
“Remember the day you first saw your robot move, or the moment your code finally worked?”
“Those were the moments that ignited our spark, the moments that fuelled our determination,” the Cuban-born instructor stated.
In her remarks, Customer and Public Relations Manager of the NTRC, Rhea Lewis said this is the organization’s 10th MyApp Summer Programme. The one in Georgetown in August, was the second of two programmes this year. The first was held at the St Vincent Grammar School from July 22 to August 9. The MyApp Summer Programme catered for students from different schools between the ages of 12-17. Lewis said the participants gained new skills particularly in coding and robotics.
