Bunpan awards two scholarships
The Marriaqua United Friendly Society (Bunpan) held its annual scholarship and awards ceremony on Wednesday August 7, 2024 during which it awarded two scholarships for the 2024 school year which starts in September.
The scholarship recipients are Jevon Robertson and Emma Daize. Jevon is the son of Laura Robertson of Penniston. He placed 22nd for boys and 31st overall in the CPEA, with a percentage of 93.6 per cent. Emma is the daughter of Carolyn Nelson of Pembroke. She placed 23rd for girls and 62nd overall with an overall 91.8 per cent. Both students attended the Windsor Primary School.
The scholarship, which spans seven years, covers the payment of external examination fees and provides substantial financial support, a release from Bunpan states. Jevon will be attending the St. Vincent
Grammar School, while Emma will be attending the St. Vincent Girls’ High School in September. Each of the scholarship recipients will receive $1,400.00) for the upcoming academic year. Additionally, 14 other applicants will receive one $150) each as one-off financial assistance for school expenses. Students were also informed that $25 of their bursary was allocated to registering them as official members of the Society. President of the Marriaqua United Friendly Society, Leroy Jackson, highlighted the significance of the occasion by noting that the Society is celebrating its 70th anniversary.
He shared a brief, enlightening history of Bunpan, emphasizing the importance of maintaining active financial membership within the Society. Jackson underscored that education is a cornerstone of societal development and plays a crucial role in shaping values, work ethics, and personal achievements.
He encouraged the recipients to aspire to greatness.
The ceremony,held at the Society’s headquarters at Freeland, also featured an address by Calicia Charles, Bunpan’s scholarship recipient in 2000, who served as this year’s motivational speaker. Since the inception of the Bunpan Scholarship programme in 1985, a total of 58 full scholarships have been awarded.
