US$5 million in building supplies ordered for rebuilding after hurricane destruction
THE GOVERNMENT is spending over US $5 million to source building materials, as it seeks to repair and rebuild homes and buildings that were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024. Speaking on NBC radio on Wednesday, August 11, 2024, Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves said that over US $5 million worth of building materials have been ordered from Tankweld Ltd in Jamaica.
The first shipment is already on the ground and has been placed at various centres for distribution.
Gonsalves said the government is also engaged in discussions with another firm, for the supply of more materials to St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Apart from the materials purchased, the prime minister indicated that Tankweld has sent some materials as donation to the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Ministry of Housing, and the Housing and Land Development Corporation are responsible for repairs and rebuilding of homes.
At present, the Ministry of Housing and the Roads, Buildings and General Services Authority (BRAGSA), are seeking contractors as well as skilled and unskilled workers to be a part of the rebuilding process.
With the amount of clean up, repairs and rebuilding that needs to be done, the prime minister said “nobody should be out of work.”
This week, work began on the repair of a number of houses across the state and Gonsalves said this is just the start.
Priority will also be given to the repair of major government buildings in the Grenadines. Some private homes will be repaired as well, so that persons in shelters at schools can return to their homes. Local companies Coreas, and CK Greaves are also assisting the government with free building supplies.
