Just over 1,300 still in shelters one month after Hurricane Beryl

MORE THAN 1,000 displaced residents are still housed in emergency shelters following the passage of Hurricane Beryl which swiped St Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday, July 1, 2024.

Speaking on NBC Radio on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves said as at the end of July, 1,331 persons whose homes were either damaged or destroyed by the category 4 hurricane, were still housed in emergency shelters.

He explained that these displaced persons are in 72 shelters, 44 of them being government buildings while 28 are NGO facilities.

Of the total number, 711 of the persons in shelters are on the mainland, while the remaining persons have found shelter in the Grenadines.

Additionally, 21 mostly elderly persons who were displaced by Hurricane Beryl, are being accommodated at guest houses.

The Prime Minister also spoke of the provision of food boxes and matresses for persons affected by the category 4 hurricane which left behind a trail of damage and death, particularly in the Southern Grenadines.

Gonsalves added that some 3,642 private homes have registered under the Private Home Placement Registration, which was established on July 10 this year to accommodate persons displaced by the hurricane.

Those in registered private homes are also being assisted with groceries and other supplies, Gonsalves added.

Parliament last month approved a $136.4 million Supplementary Budget for spending in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, to assist with the relief and recovery efforts in the wake of the destruction caused by the hurricane.
