Georgetown loses community stalwart
RESIDENTS OF GEORGETOWN are mourning the loss of their community stalwart, Myrna Morris, who died last Monday night, August 5, 2024.
Morris, who lived at Church Street, died at the Georgetown Smart Hospital; she was 82.
Morris worked for many years as an educator; she also was a community activist and was well known for her culinary skills. She also was gifted in the area of craft, and willingly passed on her skills to many, including persons in Sandy Bay and neighbouring communities.
Morris was a long standing and faithful member of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Georgetown, and served in that institution’s Mothers Union for many years.
Even in her latter years, Morris still regularly made her way to church, even if she had to be assisted in doing so.
The church extended condolences to the family in Facebook post on Tuesday.
The statement said Morris “was a stalwart to our parish and the Anglican community”.
Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves also expressed condolences to the family when he spoke on NBC’s Face to Face programme on Wednesday, August 7,2024.
He also spoke highly of her son Dillon Morris, who heads BRAGSA’s operations at Rabacca.
Dillon is the second of Morris’ two children, her first child being a daughter, Monique.
Dillon was too overcome with grief to speak about his mother’s death, explaining that this was a particularly tough time having lost his father 10 years ago, also in the month of August.
His dad, Alderson Morris, was a retired police officer and also a well known member of the Georgetown community.
Myrna Morris, originally a member of the Mills family in Georgetown, was given the honour to cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony of the Modern Medical and Diagnostic Centre in Georgetown in July, 2018.
She will be buried later this month.
