SVG to get income support from World Food Programme
MANY PERSONS in St Vincent and the Grenadines who suffered loss as a result of the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024, are likely to receive support from the World Food Programme (WFP) through cash transfers.
Last Thursday July 18, 2024,WFP Executive Director, Cindy Mc Cain was in the state, and met with Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves and other members of Parliament.
The meeting took place during the luncheon period of the sitting of the House of Assembly.
Gonsalves reported briefly on his meeting with Mc Cain as he continued with a ministerial statement on the impact of the category 4 hurricane in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The prime minister said that the WFP has given the commitment to work with the government to provide cash transfers to affected persons.
He explained that this will be similar to what the WFP did following the explosive eruptions of La Soufriere Volcano in April 2021.
This is likely to be done after the WFP completes it’s next round of food distribution.
The WFP is currently distributing food to people in St Vincent and the Grenadines who were severely affected by Hurricane Beryl.
The WFP which is an arm of the United Nations is also providing similar assistance to neighbouring Grenada which was also negatively impacted by the hurricane.
