BRAGSA undertakes 40-day cleanup

THE ROADS, BRIDGES AND GENERAL SERVICES AUTHORITY (BRAGSA) is expected to spend in excess of EC$22 million on the clean up of the Southern Grenadines in the aftermath of the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

Speaking on radio on Sunday, July 14, 2024, Prime Minister, Dr Gonsalves said BRAGSA is going to need approximately 300 people to be engaged in the clean up and encouraged “able bodied men and women” to be part of this exercise.

BRAGSA will pay EC$200 per day; however, each worker will take home EC$135 per day. The other $65 will be deducted for the contractor to cover NIS payments and provide food.

The prime minister said though the clean up is an expensive venture, it must be done.

“This is a huge exercise; we can’t penny pinch on this…we have to be prudent …doing it in the fastest possible way.” BRAGSA has awarded three contracts to Hutchinson, Derrick Charles and John Greaves to handle the clean up on Union Island. Greaves will mainly be responsible for cleaning Government facilities, including schools and state offices.

“Hutchinson is dealing with Clifton going right up to the learning resource centre, and Derrick Charles is dealing with the area from that go right up into Ashton and Campbell and up into Valley,” Dr. Gonsalves said. (API)
