Spring Village Maths enthusiast places third in CPEA
Sonjé Lewis, a young student from the Spring Village Methodist School, demonstrated exceptional mathematical skills by achieving a perfect score in the 2024 Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA).
In 2022, Lewis participated in the annual KCCU quiz and secured the second position, showcasing his proficiency in various subjects. He also excelled in the 2023 Hodder Education and Ministry of Education maths quiz, securing the third position.
The 10 year old, who enjoys problem solving and drawing comics said, “I felt happy, and I am proud of myself,” after learning about his stellar academic performance while he was at the school’s ball. The youngster said he expected to score high in Mathematics, and so did his mother, Emma Edwards, who shared that Sonjé is a self-motivated worker and was proud of the sacrifices she made to ensure his success.
“He does things on his own time. I normally don’t have to pressure him to get school work, he does it on his own, but he’s very, very determined, and if he sets his mind to this, that’s what he’s going for,” the mother said.
Edwards said she received the news from her sister, who saw a post about the preliminary results on Facebook, saying he had achieved a perfect score. Edwards said she was too excited to go to sleep that night. When asked about his preparation habits, Edwards said, “For CPEA, he studied very hard. He got help from me, my sisters, my niece, but this subject maths, he doesn’t really need that extra push for it, like in the other subjects.”
At his graduation, Sonje was given the award for Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. Lewis was also decorated with the Academic Excellence Award.
Lewis is looking forward to entering the St Vincent Grammar school at the start of the new school year to continue his academic success. His mother, who has always been one of her son’s biggest supporters, said she supports his choice and will try her best to help him, especially in the area of ensuring he is transported to and from his Spring Village home to school.
She is advising parents to “never stop believing in your children. Don’t doubt them when they tell you that they could do something; believe in them. Give them the extra push; always be there for them; make time for them- that is the most important thing, making time for them.”
