Police issue warning about underage drinking
Underage drinking and children being left unsupervised are practices that the police have noted are leading to increased reports of sexual offences during the Carnival season.
The Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) wrapped up its Crime Prevention Week of Activities on Friday, June 26, 2024, with an exhibition outside the Central Police Station in Kingstown where the Sexual Offences Unit offered information to the public about the different forms of sexual assault and what to do if they are a victim of such.
In an interview with SEARCHLIGHT, Police Constable Christal Walker, said Carnival is a heightened period for the Unit and they are hoping that educating the public and parents especially, about the dangers of leaving children unsupervised will see a reduction in reported cases.
“Do not leave your children unsupervised to go to any fete. Leave them with someone responsible … and don’t leave them alone. If you don’t have anyone to stay home then stay at home with your children.”
PC Walker said parents should also educate their children as to what is sexual assault and what steps to take if they are confronted by a potential abuser.
“You need to educate your children and teach them about the different forms of sexual offenses. Tell them not to keep secrets, and also, I would advise children never to accept gifts from strangers.”
On a recent Cop Chat programme hosted on WEFM 99.9 SVG, Station Sergeant Junior Baptiste flagged the practice of alcohol consumption by teenagers. He said this puts them in a dangerous position and exposes them to sexual assault.
“We are seeing the parties are getting younger and younger in terms of more teenagers are partying and drinking alcohol, consuming it at an alarming rate, and then they become impaired and they become vulnerable for persons to take advantage of them.”
Sergeant Baptiste advised all persons to pay close attention when their drinks are being served at Carnival events.
“If someone offers you a drink, whether you are male or female, you must be present when this drink is poured to ensure persons are not slipping anything into these drinks that can impair you… because it does happen. Next thing you wake up somewhere feeling used and you can’t remember what happens ‘cause you are feeling out of it.”
He added that the police often have little information to go on when reports are made because the memory of the victims has been compromised.
“Yes, you can make a report but you can’t remember anything unless someone sees something, so there is no information that can help police. Yes it is a party and you want to enjoy yourself, but you have to be mindful.”
