SVG MET: Center of Hurricane Beryl to pass over SVG Monday morning
Manager of Meteorological Services in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), Billy Jeffers has warned of catastrophic damage by Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 storm which is projected to begin impacting the nation from Sunday evening, June 30, 2024.
“ This system is a very dangerous, major hurricane, “ Jeffers said in a national statement based on the 5:00 p.m advisory in which he outlined some of the hazards associated with such a dangerous system. “Your action, or inaction can determine life or death,” said Jeffers, who appeared on radio alongside the Director of the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), Michelle Forbes.
“So a strong appeal is being made to the residents, [and] visitors of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to take the necessary precaution to protect life first, and property.
Beryl is expected to throw up waves in excess of 13 feet, and rainfall of around six inches. A flash flood warning went into effect at 6:00 pm Sunday, and marine warnings were issued at noon. Fisherfolk also were advised to move their vessels and equipment to higher ground for safety.
The Centre of Hurricane Beryl is forecast to pass over SVG on Monday morning, “however, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will be getting storm force conditions, maybe from later tonight” Jeffers stated.
