10th placed Jordi Lewis says that he didn’t put in much work

There are students who are naturally intelligent and Jordi Lewis is one of them. He placed eight for boys, and 10th overall in the 2024 Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) as a student of the Sugar Mill Academy  “I feel good because I didn’t put in much work. I feel what you put in, you get out and I didn’t put in much work because I knew that everybody who comes from like top one to 30 for boys will end up in first stream and stuff like that. So, it wasn’t much of a pressure…so I didn’t study that much,” Jordi revealed.

“I still did past papers and stuff, but it wasn’t that serious for me,” Jordi told SEARCHLIGHT on Monday June 24, 2024.

The scholar received 68 out of 75 for Language Arts; 71 out of 75 for Mathematics; 71 out of 75 for Science; and 67 out of 75 for Social Studies for a total of 477 out of 500 overall when all the marks, including the school-based assessment are included.

The Brighton resident is the son of Dan and Julie Lewis and enjoys playing soccer. He claims he played video games the night before the exams as he was confident in his own ability to succeed and place among the top students.

“My favourite subject is probably Mathematics, mainly because I love my teacher. She’s very good at teaching Mathematics, and I love doing the problems and solving them,” he explained.

“My mother always told me that I’m naturally smart and it will take me a long way, but once I get to secondary school I would have to study,” Jordi revealed.

The youngster, who also enjoys sailing, is advising students that in order to do well they have to pay attention in school and remain calm during exams.

“When you’re doing the exams, keep a calm and steady pace, don’t rush it…and if you want those top spots, you must study and do those past papers and things like that.”

Jordi said he was at home when he heard about his results, and was a bit confused when he saw his position.

“…I was like, ‘wait, what did I come?’…and my brother was like, ‘you came 10th’, and then he just grabbed me and like we were hugging and stuff.”

He said his parents were not at home at the time, but when they arrived “…we showed them the results… we were trying to say that we saw a funny video, just trying to prank them and stuff, and when we showed them my dad was like high fiving me, and my mom started almost crying.”

He said he felt good also because he and his brother made a bet “a year ago that he would beat me for CPEA, but he came 10th for boys and 23rd overall”. Jordi said he received congratulations from friends and family “and it feels so good to just see all that in my phone”. He also expressed gratitude to his teachers. At this point Jordi thinks he wants to be a football player or sailor, but that can change.
