Sion Hill Euphonium receives monetary donation

A broad smile of appreciation and surprise enveloped the face of chairman of the Sion Hill Euphonium Steel Orchestra, Warren Knights on Saturday June 8, 2024, when he received a donation for the steel orchestra. Director of SVG Solidarity in Action Inc. Noel Jackson, announced at a brief ceremony that his organisation was donating $15,000 to the steel orchestra.

Jackson’s revelation immediately hit a high note at Euphonium’s pan yard, in Sion Hill.

Unaware beforehand of the amount of the sponsorship, Knights told SEARCHLIGHT, “The donation could not have come at a more appropriate time as we are rebuilding the band in terms of instruments, which will serve us in good stead for our upcoming Summer Programme”.

Lauding the contribution Knights said, “ It is a really good gesture from them…pans are very expensive We have to import them from Trinidad and Tobago, because they are no longer built here in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Surely, the contribution will go a long way as we strive to provide that social outlet for young people”.

Speaking at the brief handing over last Saturday, Jackson said the decision to provide the steel orchestra with the funds was uncomplicated.

“The Board met and readily our chairman, Mr Renrick Rose, said let us do so something, and he suggested to make a contribution to new instruments.”

He explained that the SVG Solidarity in Action Inc. is able to provide organisations and individuals with assistance through proceeds from the car park located next the Financial Complex on Bay Street in capital, Kingstown.

SVG Solidarity in Action Inc.,was established in 2010 between the National Labour Congress(NLC) and the Windward Islands Farmers Association(WINFA).

Also present at last Saturday’s handing over on behalf of SVG Solidarity in Action Inc. were Joy Matthews, director; Perlina Baptiste, corporate secretary; and Sedikah Wilson-Clasp, the administrative clerk at the car park. Apart from Knights, members of the Sion Hill Euphonium’s Junior band were on hand at the handing over.

The Sion Hill Euphonium Steel Orchestra was formed in 1981, and has won several Panorama titles both at the junior and senior levels.
