Headstart Preschool celebrates National Heroes Day
Students of the Headstart Pre-school, located at Villa, undertook what has been described as an enriching journey as they celebrated National Heroes Day on Wednesday, March, 13,2024, one day ahead of the official national holiday.
In a release the Pre-school said the children, accompanied by their teachers visited the National Trust Museum, where they immersed themselves in the rich cultural heritage of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Led by their guide, Aaliah Knights, the young learners were captivated by a plethora of exhibits. They marvelled at replicas of the ancient petroglyphs, which hold significant historical importance . These intricate carvings provided a window into the past, offering glimpses of the indigenous Carib people’s way of life.
The children also had the opportunity to admire the ceremonial bat stand, a symbol of tradition and unity within Vincentian culture. As they explored further, they encountered the diverse array of burial pots, each telling its own story of ancestral reverence and heritage preservation.
Among the highlights of their museum tour was the Cyrus Collection, showcasing modern pieces that pay homage to Vincentian craftsmanship and creativity.
However, one notable absence was the painting of the Right Excellent Joseph Chatoyer, a revered Garifuna chief and National Hero, which had been relocated to Argyle. Nevertheless, this provided an opportunity for the students to delve deeper into the life and legacy of Chief Chatoyer, fostering a deeper appreciation for his contributions to the nation’s history.
The engagement didn’t end with the museum visit. Throughout the rest of the week, Headstart students will continue their exploration of Vincentian culture as they participate in hands-on activities such as creating their own petroglyphs, and engage in lessons focused on the Carib people and their indigenous traditions.
As Headstart Preschool celebrates National Heroes Day, they not only honour the heroes of the past but also empower the heroes of the future – their students. Through education and exploration, these young minds are poised to carry forward the legacy of resilience, pride, and unity that defines the spirit of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
