Bequia Bluff Bay road issues being addressed

Motorists travelling along the Bluff Bay Road in La Pompe, Bequia, will soon get some relief as the Government has begun critical repair work on that damaged roadway.

Deputy Director of Grenadines Affairs, Carlos Williams, said the intention is to fix that part of the roadway which has been failing for years, and which with increased vehicular traffic, has worsened over the last few months.

“The Bluff has been a much talked about issue of concern for years and the government has for quite some time been trying to identify what the issues and the challenges are with regards to that particular section of the road,” Williams told SEARCHLIGHT.

He noted that the road is critical because it connects Port Elizabeth and Paget Farm.

“It connects north and south together,” Williams emphasised.

He said the problems faced are not just along the Bluff Bay Road, but in other sections of Bequia’s road network through poor construction methods in the past, made worse with the increase in vehicular traffic, which is increasingly challenging the integrity of the island’s road network.

Williams said that the current initiative forms part of a larger project to realign the entire road network. The current initiative is to do remedial work in that area, since it is part of a bigger project, which is the realignment of the road itself, that would remove the threat of road failure.

Currently 115 feet of wall is being replaced, following which the service lane will be redone, but connectivity, Williams said, is maintained although there has been a slow down in traffic flow as there is now only one service lane.
