Browne appointed High Court Judge

Chief Magistrate, Rechanne Browne, has been appointed to the position of High Court Judge (Ag) of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC).

The appointment was announced by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission in a letter dated December 18, 2023.

Browne will be assigned to the jurisdiction of St Lucia for a period of three months, January 8 to March 31, 2024.

Her legal career started back in 2000 when she was called to the Bar. From 2000 to 2012, she worked in private practice at the Browne and Browne Law Chambers, established by her father Theodore Browne in 1984.

Browne’s stint on the local court circuit began in July 17, 2012 when she served as Acting President of the Family Court. She held the position until January 2013, when she was appointed Senior Magistrate.

Her appointment as Chief Magistrate came on September 15, 2014, a post she currently holds. As Chief Magistrate, she presides over the Serious Offences Court located in Kingstown.

In addition to serving on two important committees – the Criminal Procedure Rules Committee and the Sentencing Guidelines Advisory Committee, Browne has been involved in the determination of many serious and important criminal and civil cases.

At the Serious Offences Court, Browne has been vocal about the prevalence of firearm offences coming before the court.

Her appointment will bring the total number of Vincentians serving on the ECSC to five. The most recent appointment was former Senior Magistrate, Rickie Burnett who took up the position as High Court Judge in April this year.
