Education Minister sings praises of UWI Global Campus St. Vincent

Minister of Education Curtis King has high praises for the UWI Global Campus St Vincent.

Speaking at the second annual Honour Roll and Recognition Ceremony on Saturday, November 18, Minister King expressed immense fulfilment at the recently held graduation ceremony where students from St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) topped the number of students awarded First Class honours.

He praised the Student Guild and staff at the UWI Global Campus St Vincent for hosting the ceremony to appreciate the top students and noted that those who spend time learning about the past, were always the best prepared for the future.

The Education Minister also noted that about 1,000 tuition scholarships were given by the Government in 2022 and over 1,400 in 2023, with a significant number of students attending the Global Campus St Vincent.

Minister King revealed that the secondary and primary divisions were also seeing growth, despite this country’s education system still being in what he termed as the “recovery stage” from Covid-19 and the eruptions of La Soufriere.

He however expressed displeasure with the naysayers, whom he said were always taking a negative outlook. He admitted that while the system was not perfect, The Minister called for a more balanced critical analysis.

King pointed out, “The only way we are going to propel our way forward is by analysing what we do, in every respect, in every discipline. And so, education is no different, we need always to critique. However, in doing so, we must not forget to build on the strengths that we do have.”

He further implored, “And I want to say despite all that we might hear about our education system, the truth is, there are a lot of good things that are happening and a lot of good things on which we are building.”

Appreciation was given to Valedictorian Breya John, while the 282 Awardees on the Honour Roll List for the first and second semesters of the 2022/2023 Academic year received certificates, as well as gift cards from Cariway.

Staff at the UWI Global Campus Site such as Programme Officer in the Student Experience Unit Ronnie Daniel, Library Assistant Samantha Williams, Officer-in-Charge Camille Lakhram and retired Head of Site, Deborah Dalrymple were also appreciated.
