Fatal accident at site of new ECGC flour mill

The Eastern Caribbean Group of Companies (ECGC) has said that an independent investigation is being conducted into the fatal accident which occurred at the Campden Park plant this week.

On Tuesday, November 21, Corwin Franklin was injured at a construction site at ECGC when he reportedly fell from a building. He was transported to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries the same day.

Franklin, 36, who goes by nicknames such as ‘Bodow’ and ‘Bomb ah drop’ is a well-known conductor on the Campden Park route. He had stopped the omnibus work around three months ago and taken up work as a labourer with the construction company contracted by ECGC to build a new flour mill.

SEARCHLIGHT understands that the accident occurred while Franklin was working to move lumber to the top of the building. While moving the lumber he fell to the ground. Franklin reportedly sustained injuries to his head, ribs and lungs.

Long time friend of Franklin, Shane Williams told SEARCHLIGHT, that the deceased had intentionally stepped away from the chaos of conducting omnibuses and was focused on bettering his life.

“On vans he was helpful and a really good conductor. He was a more calm person … he was a hustler and was working to turn his life around and it is just sad that he died trying to do that.”

The company released a statement on Thursday, November 23, stating “a worker employed to the construction firm working on our new flour mill building, fell at the site and subsequently died at the hospital.”

The statement also said the company was “deeply saddened” by the death and is focusing on “providing emotional support for the family affected and our teams”.

Franklin is said to have been married with four children.
