Students of Tourama Government make donation to St Benedict’s Day Nursery

Students attending the Tourama Government School have made a worthwhile contribution to the St Benedict’s Day Nursery and Children Home in Georgetown, while learning about social responsibility.

In August, the school’s Student Council embarked on an initiative to collect items to donate to the home. Principal of the Tourama Government School Sheril-Ann Woods told SEARCHLIGHT that this initiative took the form of a can fest.

One Friday in August, the students left their school in Overland, and journeyed to Georgetown to execute their donation drive. Under the watchful eyes of their teachers, the students embarked on a can fest, where they appealed to shoppers at a supermarket along Commercial Road, to purchase one extra canned item that day.

Woods said the response from members of the public in Georgetown was very encouraging, and they were able to collect over $300 in canned and other non perishable items.

On Monday October 16, as part of their World Food Day celebrations, the students again journeyed to Georgetown. This time, they headed to Mt Bentick to visit the St Benedict’s Day Nursery and Children Home. The items collected during the can fest were then presented to Director of the home, Sis Nyra-Anne Pajotte.

Woods explained to SEARCHLIGHT that the items donated included: tuna, sausages, mixed vegetables and other non perishable food items.

According to Woods, the items will be used to prepare meals for residents of the home, many of whom are orphans or children with physical and other challenges.

While this was the first time that the school was making this donation, the principal said the Student Council executive hopes to make it an annual event.

Woods added that the can fest and the donation to St Benedict’s were also geared at teaching the primary school children social responsibility and leadership skills.
