PM Gonsalves rules out snap elections

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves has made it clear that there will be no snap elections, ahead of the November 2025 date when general elections are constitutionally due in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).

It has been surmised by some that because of the development projects taking place, elections are near.

Gonsalves however rejected this theory, as he delivered the feature address at a ceremony for the handing over of houses in Sandy Bay on Thursday October 26.

“Me nar call elections now!,” he asserted, adding that the government is simply doing what it’s doing.

“I am stronger than ever; I am more vigorous than ever,” Gonsalves said, as he prepares to lead the Unity Labour Party into the 2025 general elections.

Sandy Bay is in the constituency of North Windward, which is represented by Deputy Prime Minister Montgomery Daniel.

Hospital Administrator Dr Grace Walters is slated to be the ULP’s new candidate for the constituency whenever the elections are called.

Speaking to the gathering last Thursday, Gonsalves said: “I am relying on Sandy Bay to be in the vanguard in the struggle of the Comrade, for progress, for peace, for prosperity, for security and for sustainable development for all.”

Last Thursday saw the distribution of the final 20 of 68 houses which were built in order to relocate persons displaced following the April 2021 volcanic eruptions.

The Prime Minister promised that government will continue to build houses.

“One thing for sure, even though we can’t build all the houses at one time, you know you can put your pot on the fire; and you will get help from the Unity Labour Party government.”

Having won the last five consecutive general elections in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Gonsalves said that by the end of 2025, he will be the “Six Star General.”

“Nobody leaving Comrade to go and vote Friday as Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines; you know that, and I know that.

Gonsalves, who is the representative for North Central Windward, said he is not sitting down, as he still has runs to make “because I’m in a test match.”

He promised Vincentians that they will continue to see more development between now and next year, in areas such as tourism, hotel and sea defences.

General elections were last held in St Vincent and the Grenadines on November 5, 2020.
