Heavy rainfall causes property damage in Dickson Village

Some residents of Dickson Village in Georgetown suffered damage to their properties due to heavy rainfall recently.

SEARCHLIGHT understands that there were minor landslides and flooding close to rivers in the community.

One resident, Joselth Frederick told SEARCHLIGHT that she and her companion Christopher James lost a back wall on their property.

Frederick said the wall fell after persistent rainfall on Saturday, October 21.

She said the wall was built to secure a shop which they operate.

Frederick explained that their home is close to two rivers.

“We have a river on the right and another river also on the left.

“During all the rain on Saturday, the two rivers came down so terrible,” the Dickson shopkeeper related.

The soil around her property became over saturated and the back wall collapsed.

Apart from the fallen back wall, the family also lost vegetable seedlings, a ladder and other items that were washed away by the swollen river.

“Saturday night, we did not sleep at all, we set up all night, watching the rivers.”

Frederick is appealing for some river defence to be constructed in Dickson, so that residents do not have to fear each time it rains heavily.

She is also seeking assistance to rebuild the back wall of their property.

That weekend, there was also flooding in other parts of Georgetown, including along the Windward Highway in Brownstown.
