Jazz at Sunset attracting ever-growing diverse audience

The September music scene in SVG kicked off with JAZZ@SUNSET, hosted by the Dexter Rose led Jazz Tropical Project (JTP) on September 3.

The series of Sunday evening concerts has been attracting an ever-growing diverse audience of Vincentians and visitors. The shows typically feature a wide range of Jazz themes from Kaiso jazz, Latin jazz, smooth and Reggae jazz, gospel and blues.

The stage setup was once again impressive, with upgraded lighting that enhanced the seaside ambiance. A growing number of young enthusiasts joined the event, infusing it with energy and style. The highlight of the show was the dynamic Bequia-based duo of Louis and Jan on keyboard and saxophone, which captivated the audience with their impromptu jam session with musicians from JTP and invited musicians from the audience.

Cleo Hendrickson, a Vincentian songbird, delivered soulful ballads, including a remarkable rendition of Sade’s “Your Love is King”; and Etta James’s “At Last”. And there was a pleasant surprise appearance by Samantha Pedroza, from Texas performing here for the first time and who blended in seamlessly with the host band as she performed Etta James’s classic “I’d rather go blind’’.

Towards the end, Juan Carlos took the stage with energetic Reggaeton themes that got the crowd dancing. The Latin rhythms added to the magic of the JTP experience, though there was a subtle call for some Soca tunes. The playlist included hits like “Stand By Me”; “Ain’t No Sunshine”; “Watermelon Man”; “Guantanamera”; and “Three Little Birds”; by Bob Marley. Truly a diverse span.

It seemed that the audience was reluctant to see the show end, a testament to JTP’s captivating performance. Even after Cleo sang “The Carnival is Over”; the party spirit remained.

Anticipation is high for the October edition of JAZZ@SUNSET, with hopes of some Raga Soca tunes maybe?

Reflecting on JTP’s growth, the band has shown its commitment to excellence in music through collaboration, hard work, and dedication. The group’s performances have a unique coherence, where musicians communicate silently with each other and the audience, creating a special connection.

JAZZ@SUNSET is known for surprises, such as complimentary welcome drinks provided by event sponsor ECGC’s beverages and unexpected performances. There was this occasion when steel pan maestro Kingsley “Hero” Roberts appeared. The smooth transitions between acts, interestingly without a master of ceremonies certainly adds to the show’s charm. The venue, Basil at Villa, plays a significant role in the event’s success, and JTP is grateful for the support.

JAZZ@SUNSET continues to evolve and impress, attracting new fans and retaining its dedicated following. The passion and dedication of Jazz Tropical Project shine through, making
it a must-see musical experience in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for quality entertainment.
