Handbook launched for patients on haemodialysis

Patients receiving haemodialysis treatment at the Modern Medical and Diagnostic Center (MMDC) can now be better informed about the treatment they are receiving at the Georgetown facility.

This was made possible with the launch of a handbook for these patients .

The launch took place at the MMDC on Thursday, June 29, and happened simultaneously with the commissioning of this country’s first MRI.

In her address at the ceremony, Hospital Administrator, Dr Grace Walters commended the staff at the centre, and staff of the dialysis unit for the publication of the handbook, noting that it will guide patients receiving haemodialysis.

“It also provides specific information on home care,” Dr Walters pointed out.

In the handbook, patients will also receive a guide on their treatment as well as on other topics, including how to maintain good health.

The hospital administrator said the handbook was prepared “so that the patients can be guided properly and be involved in their own treatment”.

Also speaking at the ceremony last Thursday, deputy Hospital Administrator Idinger Walker, said there are now 20 haemodialysis units at MMDC.

Initially, there were just 7 units at the facility.

When treatment began, the cost to the patient was heavily subsidized.

However, since September last year, dialysis patients are having free access to their life saving treatment.

At present, there are 50 patients receiving treatment at the Georgetown facility Mondays to Saturdays.

This treatment is needed when a person’s kidneys fail and the body is unable to cleanse itself from toxins.
