Southern Grenadines MP calls for greater attention to infrastructure in the constituency

Member of Parliament for the Southern Grenadines, Terrance Ollivierre is pleading for the development of the infrastructure in his constituency.

Ollivierre raised his concerns about the lack of infrastructural development in the area, as he spoke on the New Democratic Party’s (NDP’S) New Times programme on Tuesday June 20.

His main area of concern was the lack of a proper wharf on the Southern Grenadine island of Canouan.

On Tuesday, Ollivierre said that the people of Canouan “are crying out for help “ He noted that for over 20 years now, he has been appealing to the authorities to fix the main wharf on the island.

Instead of solving this problem, Ollivierre said a temporary wharf was built over 10 years ago.

However, even with this temporary wharf, there are still problems, especially in times of heavy rainfall.

“The condition of using it is extremely harsh.” He said when it rains, the area at the temporary wharf gets muddy, making it difficult for persons using the facility.

“You can’t even dress properly to go on the wharf,” Ollivierre stressed, as he asked the question “how long can something be temporary?”

The Southern Grenadines Parliamentary Representative complained that when it rains people using the temporary wharf “have to be jumping pool and mud.”

“The main wharf is so damaged, even the fast ferry cannot dock up properly.”

Ollivierre related that the situation is so bad that “people have to be jumping to get on and off” the boat.

“In this day and age, and we are talking about people giving glowing…remarks about the Grenadines, and look at the conditions we have to bear.

“Look at the conditions we have to undergo; it is just not fair.”

Explaining that his constituents are hard working people, and that they “contribute a lot to the economy of St Vincent and the Grenadines,” Ollivierre said it is time for them to get their fair share.

The Parliamentary Representative called on government to “tell us exactly what is the plan” for a new wharf in Canouan.

Apart from the wharf in Canouan, Ollivierre also voiced his concerns about the condition of roads in Mayreau and other parts of that constituency.

“We tired complain … we can’t be going on like this all the time,” Ollivierre commented.

Speaking as well about problems at the airport in Canouan, Ollivierre said “infrastructure in these islands need fixing.”
