A loyal send-off for our beloved Yvette Wilson-Bentick

The sudden death of our beloved 73-year-old Yvette Bentick plunged Union Island into mourning culminating in the well-deserved loyal send off that she was given on Saturday, April 1st, 2023 at the St. Matthias Anglican church at Ashton. The Rev.Dr. Pamela Daniel together with lay readers Claudia John and Magarette Wilson ensured that she was accorded full Anglican rites.

Her love of singing caused her to lend her melodious voice to the church choir where her soprano enriched so many church services. The funeral was befittingly punctuated by extra singing in tribute to her. The police band’s playing was well received not only in their special renditions but also accompanying the cortège to the cemetery at Campbell. Organists Dr. Anthony Stewart and Leroy Mitchell ensured that appropriate music was provided for the viewing and the service.

Choirs and soloists gave their tributes in song. Yvette was loyal to her God and her church.

She was loyal to her children too, making every effort to provide for daughters Gracita, Cleve, and Petra, ensuring their success. She was a blessing to many other children too as she taught for many years in the elementary school. Teacher Yvette was among the first Pre-school teachers on the island and distinguished her teaching career as the “guardian of the King’s English.” Her efforts in Adult Education are well known especially in the teaching of Reading. She was an avid reader and loyal subscriber to the Searchlight newspaper.

Rev Dr Pamela Daniel together with lay readers Claudia John and Magarette Wilson officiated at the funeral of Yvette Wilson-Bentick.

She was loyal to her community serving as secretary of the Union Island Friendly Society for many years. She served on the Liquor License Board. She was loyal to her government as shown by the representation of local and national leaders. She participated as a candidate in the polls in 1991 and 1994.

She had a pleasant, loving, peace-making personality and will be greatly missed.
