Guyana to help SVG with reforestation

The government of Guyana has agreed to assist the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) in its reforestation efforts.

During a call to NBC radio from Guyana on Wednesday, January 4, Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves commended Guyana for having a properly regulated logging programme.

Logging, or the removal of trees from the forest, is one of the main causes of deforestation, and its spin-off negative effects.

Guyana has a very good regulated forestry programme,” Gonsalves told listeners on Wednesday.

He explained that an agreement has been reached between himself and Guyana’s President, Dr Irfaan Ali to assist in reforestation in SVG.

Over the years, St Vincent and the Grenadines has lost some of its forest to natural disasters and also through human action.

The volcanic eruptions in 2021 also had a negative impact on the vegetation on the slopes of La Soufriere volcano.

Prime Minister Gonsalves said Guyana would help with our reforestation, and forestry in general.

Technical teams from Guyana will work along with the Director of Forestry, Fitzgerald Providence and other persons in the Forestry Division.

Underscoring the importance of reforestation the prime minister said “the forest helps us breathe.”
