Kingstown Anglican student wins KCCU Mastermind Quiz Competition

A 12-year-old student of the Kingstown Anglican School has won the Kingstown Co-operative Union’s Mastermind Quiz Competition.

Grade Six student, Javeir Simmons outpointed his four other opponents, last Friday, December 16, at Frenches House, to cop the title, a release from KCCU states.

Simmons who went into the last round trailing, answered correctly four questions, to leave Sonjay Lewis of the Spring Village Methodist School to settle for second place.

The two were separated by 100 points, as Simmons tallied 5450 and Lewis- 5350.

For Simmons, who is a resident of Paul’s Avenue, it was sheer delight as he expressed joy in his achievement, not only for his school, but his community.

“I’m glad that I represented the Kingstown Anglican School and I am also proud of representing my community”, Simmons told SEARCHLIGHT.

Sharing in Simmons’ triumph was his father, Karanja Simmons who was moved with emotions.

After composing himself, the elder Simmons hailed the attributes of his son, stating “ He really intelligent… You see how he come back in the Buzzer round… He is a youth that I have real confidence… He is humble and contented”.

The proud father, who said he is raising his son with the help of his sister and other family members, added that Javeir is an avid reader.

“He reads a lot… He is not into the cartoon thing… He looks at a lot of Science stuff and so on”, Karanja disclosed.

Third in the placement was Kalvid Lampkin of the Pamelus Burke Primary School who counted 5250 points.

The other competitors were Mehki Bowens of the Chateaubelair Methodist School- 5100 points, and Delron Ledger of the Marriaqua Government School. Ledger totalled 4400 points.

For winning the competition, Simmons received a trophy and an Ipad, with his school getting the Challenge trophy to keep for one year, plus $2000.

Meanwhile, second place- Lewis received a laptop and a trophy, and third place-Lampkin, a cellular phone and trophy.

All participants got goodie bags filled with school supplies and an account with the KCCU.

The quiz consisted of a multi choice questions, close ended questions, Math trivia and the buzzer round.

The new format of the annual quiz, saw students wagering points on the five categories of questioning: Science, Spelling, Civics, General Knowledge and Credit Union Affairs.

Leading up to last Saturday’s final, there were the preliminaries and semi-finals.
