Some road gang workers still awaiting payment
SOME PERSONS WHO were employed on the road cleaning programme last August, are yet to be paid.
The recent road works were done under the Volcano Eruption Emergency Programme (VEEP) which is funded by the World Bank.
Acting Prime Minister, Montgomery Daniel told listeners to NBC Radio on Wednesday, that Cabinet had approved $3 million for road cleaning. The road cleaning work was done for just over one week in August.
These workers were usually paid by the Roads Buildings and General Services Authority (BRAGSA), but this time around, bank cards were issued for them to receive payment through a financial institution.
However, the documents were prepared by BRAGSA and were sent to the Ministry of Economic Planning for verification.
Daniel said that ministry then made arrangements with the bank for the cards to be issued.
The minister admitted that “there have been some challenges here, where until now, some
persons have not yet been paid.”
He said because of the entire process, there have been delays in persons receiving payment.
Responding briefly on the matter on WEFMs Issue at Hand interactive radio programme last Sunday, September 25, Minister of Finance, Camillo explained that detailed information required by the bank which some persons delayed in providing contributed to the delay.
However, the matter was being rectified. It was those employed as jobbers who were said to mostly affected.
As of Tuesday September 27, bank workers were still distributing cards.
