West Kingstown, I am willing, ready to work with you – Peters

Newly installed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator Keisal Peters says she is “ready and willing” to work with the people of West Kingstown, as she eyes the candidacy in the next General Elections.

Peters was officially sworn in as this country’s foreign affairs minister last Friday, August 27 at Government House, after serving as minister of state in that ministry since 2020.

She is the first woman and youngest person to become Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.

Her speech on Friday was one of gratitude in which she thanked members of her community for their support.

“I want the people of West Kingstown to know you are in very safe hands,” the Campden Park resident said.

“It would be remiss of me not to mention the community of West Kingstown. I want to thank you, for the ones who I knew from the very beginning- neighbours and friends- and since my appointment, getting to know the people and meet the people, you’ve been very welcoming, very receptive and you’ve indicated your willingness to work with me and I am ready and willing to work with you…”
Peters has made public her interest in contesting the West Kingstown seat currently represented in Parliament by Daniel Cummings.

While speaking on radio earlier this month, she expressed confidence that she possesses the qualities for becoming a candidate for the Unity Labour Party (ULP),in the next General Elections.

And prime minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves and leader of the ULP has declared the senator as “one to watch”, claiming that she brings a new set of interest and some support as she does ground work in the constituency.

Lawyer and veteran politician, Rene Baptiste was the last woman and ULP candidate to hold the West Kingstown seat, having been elected as the constituency representative for two consecutive terms from 2001 to 2010.

Daniel Cummings of the New Democratic Party (NDP),has since been the parliamentary representative of that constituency.
