Scrap metal for sale at IADC

Tonnes of scrap metal, the property of the International Airport Development Company (IADC) are currently up for sale.

And, Minister of Transport and Works Julian Francis is encouraging persons to purchase the scrap metal, but warns that it is not a small undertaking like taking up a radiator or transmission and putting it in a vehicle.

Among the items available for sale as scrap metal are an old bulldozer, worn out excavators and other earth moving equipment. Francis said the equipment was accessed with the view to sell them as scrap and persons interested in purchasing scrap metal may contact Dexter Gellizeau at the Roads, Buildings and General Services Authority (BRAGSA).

“It’s a huge undertaking and those who have interest in it can make proposals,” said Francis, who added that the BRAGSA has already taken over a fair amount of assets of the IADC.

Among these assets are the hot mix plant, the concrete batching plant and other ancillary equipment, including six concrete mixer trucks and 11 big trucks.

Francis revealed that BRAGSA will soon take over all the IADC’s equipment, as the IADC will soon be phased out.

It was also revealed that the crusher which was brought in to build the Argyle International Airport (AIA) has been dismantled, as it has seen the most working hours of any crusher on the island. A crusher is a machine designed to reduce large rocks into smaller rocks, gravel, or rock dust.

Francis said that a significant sum of money must be spent to rejuvenate the AIA crusher and they are currently questioning if they should invest in the repair of the machine, or if they should sell it for scrap and use that money to help fund a new crusher.

He said also the opportunity is there for a private company to invest in a crusher, because the Government needs aggregate.

Francis also revealed that theGovernment has allocated EC$6 milllion to fix some the AIA equipment, while some are in working condition and will come in handy.(LC)
