Client not planning to waste court’s time – Lawyer

Kimolo Quashie, the ex-policeman who is accused of robbing the Canouan branch of the Kingstown Co-operative Credit Union (KCCU), is not planning to waste the court’s time.

When Quashie appeared at the Serious Offences Court on Tuesday, his lawyer Grant Connell asked Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias for a short adjournment, stressing that the defence had no intention of wasting time.{{more}}

The preliminary inquiry was, however, set for December 12.

Quashie who lives in Ottley Hall and was employed as a security guard on Canouan at the time of the incident, was charged that on August 31 at Retreat Village, he, being armed with a knife, robbed Shirlan Ashton of Rockies, Canouan of $1,150, her property and at the time of doing so and in order to do so, put Ashton then and there subject to force, contrary to Section 216 of the criminal code.

He is also charged for assaulting Ashton, causing actual bodily harm, contrary to Section 173 of the criminal code.

After the charges were read to him, Quashie was not required to enter a plea because of the indictable nature of the offences and was given bail in the sum of EC$8,000 with one surety. He was bailed by his mother. He was ordered not to have any contact with Ashton.

The accused was not given reporting conditions, because he was still wearing a cast on his left leg, as he was shot by police officers the same day of the robbery.

The former policeman was, however, ordered to surrender his travel documents.

Quashie spent 19 years and three months as a member of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) before being dismissed a few years ago, some nine months short of 20 years. He lost his job and benefits over an issue relating to a missing firearm.

On the day in question, around 1.45 p.m., a man, dressed in blue jeans and a white shirt with horizontal stripes, entered the KCCU office and demanded money from the lone female employee.

The masked man, holding what looked like a firearm, grabbed the cash pan, at which time a scuffle ensued between him and Ashton, the KCCU employee.

Searchlight later obtained photos of part of the incident, taken from closed circuit cameras in the building. One of the photos was of the robber pointing something at a woman sitting behind a desk, while another photo shows the woman and the man struggling and the mask pulled from the robber’s face.
