SVGTCCU continues to invest in education

Two students of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) were awarded scholarships and eight others bursaries by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Teachers Credit Union (SVGTCCU).

Marva Bynoe, Delsa Campbell, Shawn Chandler, Dumona Charles, Franklyn Evans, Elma Franklyn, Ledson Jack and Irvin Warrican all received bursaries, while Jose Ann Carrington and Daniel Hamilton were awarded scholarships.{{more}}

During a presentation ceremony last Wednesday, at the credit union’s office, chief executive officer Julian Jack stressed that parents should start saving early to help in paying for education in the future.

“Every month, every two months, every six months, every year; however you choose to do it, you put some money into that account, so that by the time the child reaches 17 or 18 and ready to take on university, you have funds stowed away…at Teachers Credit Union to help to pay for that child’s education,” he said.

“We want you to start early, so that it doesn’t have to take a lot of money to get to that point where you can send your child to university.”

Jack also congratulated the recipients and encouraged them to make the most of the assistance.

“If you want to be somebody you have to have some educational background that will allow you to live and to live comfortably,” Jack said.

Also speaking at the presentation ceremony, president of the credit union Kay Martin-Jack said that the money is distributed in order to achieve one of the TCCU’s strategic objectives.

“In the disbursement of the bursaries here today, we are giving you our members this opportunity, because of an awareness that the achievement of one of our strategic objectives of a better life for all depends in the longer term on the level of education of our citizens.”

She said that the bursary and scholarship awards are a reflection of the concepts on which credit unions were formed.

“The teacher’s credit union will always have education as one of its priorities,” Martin-Jack pointed out.

The credit union president said that they remain committed to their members and providing services which will enhance their members’ lives. She noted, however, that the money must be put to good use.

“We want to see return on this investment. You have been selected in order that we lift from your shoulder the burden and the difficulty you have in paying your college and university fees.”

In August, the credit union awarded four secondary school students with five-year scholarships and another 49 received book vouchers.

Speaking on behalf of the scholarship recipients, Jose Ann Carrington said that she was extremely grateful for the assistance and would not disappoint.

Ledson Jack, a bursary recipient, thanked the credit union for their assistance and encouraged them to continue pushing along and doing good work.(CM)
