Soca artiste Roshik Mason on the rise

‘Dem Vincy’ was one of the first releases for Vincy Mas 2016 and well into its third month on the airwaves, the song is still receiving rave reviews and comments.

The song, which is sung and written by Union Island native Roshik Mason, has over 100,000 views on YouTube.{{more}}

‘Mason’, as he is affectionately known, told SEARCHLIGHT in a recent interview that he loves that persons are enjoying his music.

“What I love is that the people love it. The Vincentian people love it, and the Caribbean people love it.

“Really, what I’m about, I’m on the next, so ‘Dem Vincy’ is an old song for me. I going to be working on new tracks, getting new stuff done, really tryna keep the love that Vincy people have been giving to me,” he added.

The 21-year-old member of the new generation of soca music noted that the love he has received is pushing him to do new work, and while he is enjoying his great reviews, he is not going to let them get to his head.

“I’m really not swell-headed; I’m really not getting hyped up about it. I just respect the fact that Vincentians are playing Mason, are feeling the vibe,” he said.

Mason explained that one of the reasons he has not released any more music is because he is a perfectionist and is not willing to put out any mediocre music for the Vincentian public.

“I have tracks that are probably bigger than ‘Dem Vincy’, but I’m probably picky about it because it has one simple detail or two seconds of detail that I don’t like.”

The young artiste, who is also a producer, stated that most of his time is spent in the studio creating beats and recording tracks.

Mason indicated that he does not have any specific musical influence, but grabs inspiration from all genres of music.

“I listen to music from the 1930’s…1920’s music that people really wouldn’t know a lot bout. I also listen to Vybz Kartel; I would also listen to Drake, Popcaan, Movado. I really have no specific influence in music.”

The NexGen artiste stated that his goal is to be a successful artiste.

“There is a lot more than having a big song; there is a lot more than winning a soca monarch. My goal is to have a successful bank account, with successful royalties, successful imaging, successful artiste stature…,” Mason stated. (CM)
