Third case of Zika in SVG
St Vincent and the Grenadines has recorded another case of the Zika virus, bringing the total to three since the first recorded case in February.
According to a release from the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment, the recorded case is that of a 35-year-old female from Bequia.{{more}}
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Simone Keizer-Beache said on Wednesday that there have only been recorded cases of females, but that does not mean that the Zika virus only affects females. She said that for every one case found, we can assume that there are more cases out there, but the problem is that only 20 per cent of persons who have Zika would have symptoms.
âThe only thing I can think of, is that women seek health care more than men. Because there has been no evidence that Zika affects women more than men,â Dr Keizer-Beache stated.
Dr Keizer-Beache noted that while they have not ruled out that the virus may have been spread through sexual contact, they cannot confirm that the virus was spread in that manner.
The CMO is encouraging the public to work closely with the Ministry during Mosquito Awareness Week, May 9 to15. She said that the Ministry will focus on mosquito control measures, in an effort to protect the Vincentian population, especially pregnant women.
Keizer-Beache stressed that all Vincentians should continue to protect themselves by using insect repellents, wearing long clothing and engaging in vigorous source reduction measures.
