DeZigns Unparalleled turns trash into treasure

“Even in trash one can find treasure.”

This, according to the owner of a new business that sells interior décor items that have been ‘upcycled’ from products that would otherwise have been thrown away.

DeZigns Unparalleled is the brainchild of Karen James, who – apart from being an entrepreneur – is also a published author, a certified trainer and a direct response copywriter.{{more}}

Speaking at the opening ceremony of her store last Friday, April 29, James recalled that in searching for a new business venture to embark upon that didn’t require a large start-up figure, she came across ‘upcycling,’ which is repurposing items that would normally be thrown away.

“We should all do our part in preserving the environment… I also believe that the sustainability of our economy relies heavily on the appreciation and support of local businesses. And if ever a time local businesses need to be creative, it is now,” she explained.

James also expressed deep gratitude to the family, friends and other entities that have supported her throughout this venture.

Also speaking at the launch was Anthony Theobalds, senior cultural officer within the Department of Culture (Ministry of Tourism, Sport and Culture).

Describing the opening of DeZigns Unparalleled as “timely”, Theobalds lauded James for her tenacity in pursuing this venture.

“What makes this a stand-out effort is the fact that there is at its helm a person with a certain business focus, a certain business approach,” he said.

“Miss James is very open to collaboration. I want to urge other creators to join with her in building this concept further.”

Theobalds pointed out that DeZigns Unparalleled is “not a charity venture”, and should be an inspiration to other persons hoping to launch their own businesses.

The senior cultural officer also highlighted the fact that environmental conservation and recycling/upcycling can contribute to a country’s tourism product.

“We become a more attractive destination when the people visiting us realize that we are litter conscious… that we are also reducing the litter on the street… There is a very direct tourism relation.”

Also giving brief remarks was Zinzi Robertson, representative from the Solid Waste Management Unit.

Robertson congratulated James on her new endeavour, and noted that the SWMU fully endorses DeZigns Unparalleled.

“The recycling sector of St Vincent and the Grenadines… has been developing over recent years. Not only are our people looking for alternative ways of income, but they are becoming more aware of the importance of conserving the environment for future generations.”

She added: “I am seizing this opportunity to encourage others to pay closer attention to the importance and benefits of recycling, and how it would enhance our standards and quality of living.”
