Mayreau regatta kicks off this weekend
The biggest and brightest regatta is set to begin in less than 24 hours!
At 6:00 a.m. yesterday morning, fishermen in the Southern Grenadines headed out to sea, beginning the 2016 Hairoun Beer Mayreau Regatta. This 10th annual event will comprise of four fun-filled days for locals and visitors of all ages.{{more}}
In addition to the fishing competition last Thursday, there will be opening ceremonies, a traditional cooking competition, a games night and an afterparty.
Today is Lionfish Day â featuring the 5th Annual Lionfish Derby, when lionfish hunters compete to see who can catch the most lionfish, the biggest one caught and the smallest one caught. The full day of activities will include maypole dancing, a kite flying contest, a lionfish cooking competition and the first-ever Miss Mayreau Regatta Princess Pageant. Friday wraps up the dayâs activities with the Short Pants Party.
Saturday and Sunday are sailing days, with sailors in working boats from throughout the Grenadines challenging each other. New this year is youth sailing for those 10 to 17 years of age, who will compete using Optimist sail boats.
During the day, the Kiddie Regatta corner will offer a wealth of fun activities for the young ones with Craft Day on Saturday and Fun Day on Sunday. Meanwhile, the adults look forward to the All White Glow Party Saturday night.
The 2016 Hairoun Beer Mayreau Regatta will wrap up with closing ceremonies on Sunday evening when prizes will be awarded. The Mayreau Regatta and Sporting Committee is grateful to all its many partners and sponsors who enable this special event to be bigger and better each year.
