In commemoration of the 105th anniversary of the St Vincent Girls’ High School, Dr Cecil Cyrus, FRCS, made a generous donation of five copies of his books to the school’s library. He reiterated that he wanted to share his knowledge and experience with younger generations and that he was honoured to do so at the presentation. He spoke of his life’s work and offered advice to the students on their ambitions.{{more}}

The books, “Doctor Grandad” and “A Dream Come True” would be in circulation at the school’s library and one, being an autobiography, would provide insight for the students. These books would be used as building blocks in the school, figuratively, as well as literally, as Dr Cyrus’ knowledge would be imparted to the students and his books would serve as the foundation for the school’s library project.

Before leaving the presentation, Dr Cyrus took the time to answer questions from the students. In his answers he made mention of the appreciation of the elderly in society. “We are the building blocks of future generations and so should be included in events, like this, just as everyone else”. This point coincides perfectly with the GHS’s 105th anniversary, where the present student body would acknowledge and appreciate the school as a building, but also as generations of students.

The students conveyed gratitude to Dr Cyrus by thanking him for his donation and promising to make use of his books. They also expressed interest in visiting his museum in the near future.

Also present at the handing over ceremony were Dr Cyrus’s wife, Katherine Cyrus, the head of the Science Department, Juanita Hunte-King, the head of the English Department, Nicole John-Mc Lean and the headmistress of the Girls’ High School, Andrea Bowman.
