âWe aim to raise dyslexia awareness, empower families to support their children and inform policy-makers on best practices to identify and support students with dyslexiaâ, said Rotary Club president Shafia London-Williams on Wednesday.
She stressed that dyslexia is a well-recognised and accepted condition. âHowever,â she notes, âin St Vincent and the Grenadines, we are still in the early stages of increasing our awareness and acceptance of this misunderstood condition. The problems displayed by individuals with dyslexia involve difficulties in acquiring and using written language. Early identification is the key to helping individuals with dyslexia achieve in school and in life.â
The walk will begin at the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex and end at the Grassroots Tennis Court (GTC) in Richmond Hill. Interested persons must pat EC$30 to register and this money will allow you to get a T-shirt, a bottle of Tus-T water, a Vitamalt, a water-proof mobile phone pouch compliments One St Vincent Group (OSV) and useful information on dyslexia.
Sponsors include Digicel, OSV, Vitamalt, Eyes R Us, Mikeâs Screen Print and Tus-T Water.
London-Williams said that funds from the walk will be used to fund a free dyslexia symposium on May 10th at the Methodist Church Hall in Kingstown.
âThe symposium is targeted to educators and parents and will cover topics such as testing for dyslexia; addressing dyslexia in schools; bullying and dyslexia; multisensory instruction and dyslexia from the parentsâ perspective,â said London-Williams.
