I nearly lost everything in fire – Knights
Cane Grove resident Cardan Knights is counting his lucky stars after he was able to stop his business and home from being destroyed by fire.
Knights, the proprietor of St Vincent Foam Factory, told SEARCHLIGHT on Tuesday that he owes âa lot of thanksâ to a female neighbor who alerted him early about the fire.{{more}}
âI nearly lose everything. Today is my lucky day,â he said.
The elderly man, who has been living in Cane Grove for over 40 years, said that he would have lost everything again, as he lost most of his machinery and goods during the December 2013 floods.
âMy boat woulda burn upâ¦all my trucks and everythingâ¦and my whole factory wouldâve burn. She saved them for us and for me,â said Knights.
He revealed that he was informed that another neighbor started the fire while that neighbor was doing a cleanup in his yard.
âAfter he done clean it up, he light some rubbish in there and grass and everything and it was getting dark and he reckon he had all the fire out,â Knights pointed out while indicating that he had to get assistance from other neighbors to put out the fire, since he has been confined to a wheel chair for the past two years.
âI had to put two women to bring water and another man with a bucket from out of my tanks. The woman over there helped me and I have another woman here â¦and another fella came and helped. We carried water in three buckets and doused it down from the coconut tree come down,â Knights explained.
He is of the opinion that the fire escalated because of the dry season. (CM)
