Driver injured after collision with utility pole at Diamond
Truck driver Michael âMarcusâ Bessâs trip to Stubbs was cut short yesterday, when the Hino Dutro truck, T-8657, which he was driving, collided with a St Vincent Electricity Services (VINLEC) utility pole in Diamond.
The accident, which was the second one for the day at Diamond, took place at around 5 p.m. Sunday and left Bess with a broken left leg, a damaged neck {{more}}and a number of cuts and bruises on his right leg and about his body.
On Monday, Bessâs common-law-wife, Redemption Sharpes resident, Monica Matthews, speaking from Bessâs bedside at the Male Surgical Ward of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) said that she was at home watching television on Sunday afternoon, when she received a call telling her that her husband was involved in an accident.
âThe first thing that came to mind was that he was dead, because the person who called me told me it was serious, so I should come now,â said Matthews, who stressed that she is extremely grateful that Bess was not killed.
She expressed her pleasure with the way the staff at the Accident and Emergency Department of the MCMH dealt with the injured man.
Matthews added that her husband has been a truck driver for many years and this is the first serious accident he has been involved in.
Bess, who declined to make a comment, is expected to undergo surgery to correct the damage done to his leg.
The accident left residents of Stubbs, Diamond and surrounding areas without electricity for a little over three hours, while traffic had to be diverted, as the pole that the truck struck broke
and fell across the road.(LC)
