Mission Hope arrives in SVG

Fr Mike McDermott of Grand Island, Nebraska, arrived in St Vincent and the Grenadines on Thursday, February 25, for one week of missionary work with Kingstown Diocese.

The team comprises nine other members who are skilled in medical, mental and or pastoral care. They will be working closely with the St Benedict’s Nursery and the Bread of Life in Georgetown.{{more}}

This will be the team’s fifth trip to SVG, but it will be their third year doing work with children and persons in need of assistance through the Carmelite Sisters located in Georgetown.

Fr McDermott, who is the pastor at Resurrection Catholic Church in Nebraska, stated that they wished they could have stayed longer and will endeavour to do that in the coming years. He further spoke about the need for missionary work and that his skilled team was focused on “Making God’s healing presence present.”

Some of the skilled persons include a physical therapist, occupational therapist, mental health counsellor, registered nurses and other ancillary persons to assist with the missions thrust of assistance.

The group left St Vincent and the Grenadines yesterday.

“The Kingstown Diocese is pleased with Mission Hope and the work they have been doing. The church also realizes that the team’s visit to SVG is timely, especially as the universal church celebrates the jubilee year of mercy. It is an opportunity for the church, along with its people, to make visible the love and compassion of God for others,” a release said.
