WSGS launches Young Leaders project after two-year hiatus

After being out of competition for the past two years, the West St George Secondary School launched their 2016 Young Leaders project under the theme “In helping others, we help ourselves.”

Speaking at the launch at the school last Wednesday, featured speaker Inspector Hawkins Nanton encouraged the students to take advantage of the opportunity given to them during this young leaders programme.{{more}}

“You are having a golden opportunity this afternoon…where there is a programme that can help you to make life changing decisions.”

He also stated that the programme helps them develop themselves and build character, which will lead to them having better lives.

Nanton noted that at times, many person rush and overlook the words ‘you, me, we’. However, he stated, those words have very symbolic meanings.

“When we speak about me, we speak about I, as an individual; when we speak about you, we speak about our friends, about our families; when we speak about we, we speak of the wider society, the whole of St Vincent and the Grenadines when we speak about we,” he stated.

“However, if we do not have a clear vision of how we are going to make contributions in our society, in the end we will have a St Vincent and the Grenadines that is broken, that is full of trouble, that is full of crime and sooner or later,… we are the ones that are affected.”

He also said that the students should engage themselves in positive activities.

“You do not want at this stage in your life to be involved in illegal activities or activities where you might engage in something illegal, because … all of us have ambitions, all of us have dreams.”

Also speaking at the launch, principal of the school Dianna Williams told the Young Leaders that even though they may not come first or second or third, they should grasp the opportunities they would be given to build themselves.

President of the 2016 Young Leaders Iyanla Williams told her colleagues that as part of their programme, they plan on working along closely with the students.

“The 2016 Young Leaders of West St George are therefore hoping to implement a mentorship programme.”

She said that the programme will select students from the 4th and 5th form to work along with to address some of the challenges they face daily.

“As Young Leaders, we are planning to help as many students as possible to become better individuals today and for the future.”

She also stated that the members of the Young Leaders will take time to socialize with the peers during their programme.(CM)
